Welcome to the website of the Finnish Society for Immunology.

It provides up-to-date information about various immunology-related events in Finland.

The Events page includes information about upcoming meetings, congresses, etc. in Finland. We also provide information about meetings held abroad and other events, such as open post-doc positions, etc.

If you would like to add an event or a notification on our website, please contact our secretary Tapio Lönnberg (tapio.lonnberg at immunologiayhdistys.fi).

What is immunology?

Immunology is a field of science that studies the immune system and its functions. The role of the immune system is to maintain the body’s resistance against various pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi and the body’s own modified cells). As a science, immunology is networked with various other fields of science, and immunologists represent different types of competence from biological basic research to expertise on immune system disorders encountered in clinical practice.

What is the Finnish Society for Immunology?

The Finnish Society for Immunology (FSI) is a society that brings together Finnish immunologists, i.e. scientists who research immunology. In 2016, FSI had approximately 280 members.

The Finnish Society for Immunology belongs to the Scandinavian Society for Immunology (SSI), and therefore to the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) and the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS).

FSI operates under the Council of Finnish Academies as the Finnish National Committee of Immunology. It represents Finnish expertise on immunology on international and Scandinavian forums.

History

The first meeting of FSI took place on 22 November 1974, at the Meilahti Theoretical Institutes of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki. 38 people attended the meeting. There were 53 founding members.

FSI’s Board of Directors was elected as follows: Odd Wagner, Chairperson (deputy Jorma Räsänen), Olli Mäkelä, Vice Chair (deputy Marja Lehtinen), members Kauko Kouvalainen, Paavo Toivanen, Juhani Leikola and Sirkka Kontiainen, and their personal deputies: Veijo Raunio, Jussi Eskola, Jukka Koistinen and Timo Kosunen.

On 10 December 1974, the Finnish Society for Immunology (58 members) joined the Scandinavian Society for Immunology as a collective member.

The Society was registered on 18 March 1975.
